Does mattress warranty cover sagging?

A quality mattress with orthopedic properties is a rather expensive product, and it is quite normal that buyers count on its long service life. However, malfunctions do occur, and sometimes quite quickly. Is there a warranty on such bedding accessories and what is its peculiarity?

In what cases will the mattress be accepted with complaints, and when will they refuse to repair it for free? And did you know that you should return a mattress to the store with a full package of documents, including the receipt, as well as the label of the product?

What is a mattress warranty?

Bedding accessories of this type provide different warranty options depending on the situation:

  • standard possibility to return/change a new product within 14 days from the date of purchase, provided that it retains its commercial appearance (no damage to the factory packaging, seals, and labels) and the presence of documents, including a receipt for the purchase;
  • warranty on the spring unit (it is usually the longest in terms of time);
  • the warranty for the entire product.

The warranty period starts from the date of sale of the mattress, even if you started using it much later. Please note that the warranty does not mean periodic maintenance, but only the elimination of defects that occurred through the fault of the manufacturer.

Accepting the complaint, the manufacturer sends the defective product for examination to determine the cause of the damage. If it is proved that the manufacturer is at fault, the repair or replacement will be made at the manufacturer’s expense. If the product is damaged partially – it will be repaired, but if a large part of the mattress is affected – most likely the product will be replaced completely. The warranty period in both cases is not extended.

What does the mattress warranty cover?

The product can be returned if the product has the following defects:

  • the spring unit has failed;
  • the surface of the product has non-removable depressions, whose depth is more than 3 cm.

Return a mattress with defects to the store where the purchase was made. To confirm the warranty it is necessary to present the store receipt and cash register receipt, the label of the product (keep it together with the documents, if you remove it from the cover), and the warranty card itself. The coupon must contain the name of the product and the model itself, the date of sale, the stamp of the sales representative, the signature of the seller. Different mattresses have different warranty periods, but usually, the term is at least 18 months.

Is there such thing as a sagging warranty?

Usually, the manufacturers won’t have this clause, but there are some cases when they write that the product is warranted for “remaining firmness”. In the case of warranty sagging usually subsides over time. If you bought a mattress with one-day use, it’s definitely worth making a claim. Manufacturers in most cases will not refuse to replace the mattress.

TIP: One of the best options is to pick high-quality mattresses that will never sag until used adequately. Rian Deflin from Mattress Tree did extensive research on the subject – highly recommended to check it out. A good choice is a pillow-top mattress. That’s because the tops, usually between two and five inches thick, are filled with an extra layer of cushioning material designed to keep your spine in alignment.

What is not the case for mattresses?

According to the legislation of Ukraine, you can not return the printed bedding, if the size, height, color, firmness level of the product, etc. is not suitable for you. For this reason, many sellers recommend to “try on” the product on the furniture and sleeping for several nights on the mattress without removing the factory packing. In this case, it can be returned/exchanged within 14 days – at the expense of the buyer. Please note that products made to order (non-standard) cannot be returned or exchanged.

The manufacturer will not accept a claim for defective goods if the mattress has fallen into disrepair due to improper use, which will be established by the examination.

What are the requirements for operation:

  • the mattress is used, stored, and transported in a horizontal position, on a flat solid base without large gaps (distance between the slats no more than 6.5 cm);
  • the permissible loads must not be exceeded (data is written on the product data sheet);
  • it is not recommended to sit on the mattress, especially on the edge, loading vulnerable edges;
  • only superficial dry cleaning of the product is allowed at home;
  • never use a bed or sofa if its inner circumference is smaller than that of the mattress;
  • temperature limits must be complied with, depending on the materials used (many foam fillings harden in cold weather)
  • the mattress must not be loaded vertically (including jumping and walking on it), bent, soaked, treated with chemicals, etc.

Please note that these are general recommendations and more precise information can be found in the technical data sheet/ instruction leaflet for the product.

How to prolong the service life of the product?

Despite the extensive list of requirements and prohibitions, adhering to the standard rules is very simple. Use a bed or a sofa with a flat base for the mattress, turn the product regularly for even wear and tear, treat the bed accessories with care – and they will last you not only for the period declared by the manufacturer but even longer.
